Religion School
Overview
The mission of our Religion School is to prepare our children for the Rite of Confirmation into the Lutheran Church. It has been in existence at St. John's since the church was established. Religion School instruction enhances lessons learned in Sunday School each Sunday morning and takes the children beyond the lessons, deeper into the bible passages, learning about Christ’s love for us and about our faith as a Christian. Through the teaching they learn what it means to be a Lutheran and the history behind Lutheranism. Each year the Third Graders receive a bible, catechism and embroidered cover with their name on during Education Sunday as they begin their studies toward confirmation. |
Classes 3rd - 8th grades will be held every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m Between Labor Day and Memorial Day |
Third and Fourth graders are introduced to the Lutheran Catechism and start memorizing this important book. Fifth and Sixth graders continue with the Catechism and are introduced to more Bible History and memory work. Seventh and Eighth graders concentrate on knowing the Catechism, Lord’s Prayer, Creeds, parts of the worship service including baptism, communion, liturgy, and listening and taking notes on Pastor’s sermons as they prepare to be confirmed.
General Information
In years past it used to be held on Saturday but now it is held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Last year the Education Board introduced light meals being served by each religion school family. The Board and teachers noticed that most children were not getting fed before they came to class because school activities were running too late for parents to feed their child and get them to class. The introduction of the meals helped give the children a stronger attention span and seemed to enhance their learning of the material that was being covered. During Lenten services classes were dismissed at 7:00p.m. and the students sat in the front rows with their teachers during the service.
